SHEWAY Challenges In 2002, Sheway experienced a significant change to its kitchen meal preparation and menu planning. In the past, Food Runners provided prepared entrees. But in the late Fall of 2001, this support was no longer available, making food preparation and menu planning a daily event. This is quite a labour-intensive process that involves the Nutritionist, Cooks, kitchen volunteers and most members of the staff. This change has significantly impacted the Sheway budget, as all food must now be purchased for participants. Additional avenues of funding are now being sought for this important program.Provincial Cutbacks Sheway resources and staff have been greatly impacted by provincial cuts, while demand for their services have intensified. Clients are experiencing greater challenges in securing adequate food for themselves and their families, adequate shelter, finances for transportation and access to child care. As a result, Sheway is also experiencing greater demands from both our current and former clients for food, bus tickets, support for older children who can no longer attend child care. There is no evidence that these demands will lessen in the near future. |
